The 19th Century Family on Tyneside

In 1786 Robert Clouston grandfather of Joseph Storer was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the earliest known birth. Although his parents and siblings would return to Orkney by 1794, his younger brother George would return in 1815, marry and raise his family there, although George spends most of his life and seems to have died, at sea.

A second marriage in 1815 brought Thomas Clouston to Tyneside and for 30 years these remained the only Cloustons on Tyneside. Then in the space of 10 years they were joined by Joseph Clouston born 1800 in Stromness, James Clouston born 1804 in Harray, James Clouston born circa 1819, James Clouston born 1822, William Clouston , and in 1852 Thomas Clouston born 1823 in Stromness.

In the 1870's there were two more arrivals. Janet/Jessie Clouston nee Borwick arrived with her children. When in 1877 she registered the birth of her youngest daughter Alexina stating that her husband Andrew was the father. Andrew had deserted Jessie some 5 years earlier when he ran off with the wife of one of his labourers - so the story goes. The minister thought so little of Jessie's story that he recorded this on Alexina's baptism records. Also in the 1870's first William (born Aberdeen 1842) and then George Copeland (born Aberdeen 1863) the sons of John Clouston of Aberdeen arrived, completing the Clouston presence on Tyneside. The 1901 census records 130 Cloustons in the North East.

After World War I the Tyneside Cloustons spread across England and todays descedents live in most parts of the country. They have been joined by Cloustons returning from the colonies and fresh imports from Orkney. They have also spread themselves to Canada, the US and Australia.
